Explain Byrd's Point of view about the first colonists and their expectations of life in North America.

Answers

The first settlers who arrived in North America from the British islands had, fundamentally, one objective: the establishment of a liberal society, especially in religious terms.

Thus, these first settlers, who arrived aboard the Mayflower ship, as the ones that arrived in later years, sought in America what did not exist in Europe: religious freedom.

It is that, in Britain, the conflicts between Catholics and Anglicans had led to the establishment of a kind of religious totalitarianism where minorities were persecuted and could not fully exercise their faith.

Therefore, these colonists had the expectation of creating more egalitarian and free societies, where these types of restrictions did not exist.

Write one sentence that explains why a Black farmer in the South might have decided to join the Colored Farmers' National Alliance and Cooperative Union in the late 1880s. Write a second sentence that says why that same farmer might have decided to leave the CFNA after 1891.

Answers

Considering the above questions, the reason a Black farmer in the South might have decided to join the Colored Farmers' National Alliance and Cooperative Union in the late 1880s is that:

"Southern Farmers' Alliance group did not permit black farmers to join them."

However, the reason that the same farmer might have decided to leave the CFNA after 1891 is that:

"the CFNA called for a wage increase from 50 cents to $1 per hundred pounds of cotton for black cotton-pickers, a situation a Black Farmer would see as a detriment to his farming profits."

Hence, in this casez, it is concluded that CFNA before 1891 served the interests of the Black farmers; however, by 1891, some Black Farmers felt it was no longer serving their interests.

Answer:

Black farmers joined the Colored Farmers' National Alliance and Cooperative Union because the CFNA's cooperative exchanges offered them loans at fair prices and negotiated for better prices for their crops.

After the cotton strike in 1891, in which white landowners killed strikers demanding higher pay, many Black farmers left the organization because they felt it was too dangerous.

What role did chartered companies play in the British domination of India?
A. They limited British power in India by frequently disobeying royal
orders.
B. They used private armies to seize and hold Indian territories.
C. They negotiated with the Mughal Empire to purchase Indian lands.
D. They won support among Indians by promising them equal
treatment

Answers

b. they used private armies to seize and hold indian territories.

Answer:

-In general, monopolies over particular branches of commerce (such as the English East India Company’s monopoly of trade with India and Asia) were granted, and consequently chartered companies became organs of imperial expansion and control.

-Chartered companies are the monopolistic organizations in commercial capitalism of the 16th - 18th centuries and are one of the most important tools of primitive accumulation of capital and in establishing colonial empires, as capitalism needs monopoly as well as free trade.

-Chartered companies in Africa aided the emergence of a European-centered global capitalism that required African labor, commerce, and colonies to thrive, but which took more from Africa than it gave in return.

-The British chartered companies were the first and by far the most successful of all those founded during the colonial movement of the late nineteenth century. Indeed, they provided the pattern for the rather forced imitations of the method adopted by continental colonizers.

-Indian society underwent many changes after the British came to India. In the 19th century, certain social practices like female infanticide, child marriage, sati, polygamy and a rigid caste system became more prevalent.

-They defeated the Mughal empire and took control of India's government.

The Rise of Jim Crow

Although it failed, the Populist movement and other multi-racial efforts made the white Southern elite afraid that the poor whites and Blacks might unite to challenge the power of the plantation owners. So, in all Southern states, various laws were passed by white Southern legislatures to segregate – split up – Blacks and whites in Southern society. This system of segregation was nicknamed “Jim Crow” after a popular song and dance routine by a white man making fun of Black people.
The laws were very extensive. Blacks and whites were forbidden from marrying each other. Blacks and whites had to have separate toilets, separate park benches, separate drinking fountains and restaurants. Blacks on streetcars (and later buses) were forced to sit in back and give up their seats if white passengers needed them. Of course, whites and Blacks had separate schools.
The Supreme Court endorsed this segregation in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, saying segregation was fine as long as it was “separate but equal”. But it was never equal. Black schools were always given less resources and less funding. Black toilets and drinking fountains were always of lesser quality. If a business could not afford separate services, they simply refused to serve Blacks. Blacks were barred from white restaurants, shops, hotels. At gas stations, Black people had to go into the woods to relieve themselves because they were not allowed to use the toilets. It was humiliating to Black people and meant to be.
And it was clear that the main purpose of this segregation was not just humiliation but making sure that Blacks and whites lived in separate social circles so they would not unite as workers or as poor people. All meetings, concerts, and church services were segregated by law. A Tennessee law even forbid Blacks and whites from playing checkers together. Obviously, they had to pass these laws because Blacks and whites were mixing in these ways and it had to be stopped because if they mixed socially, poor whites and Blacks could unite politically against the wealthy elite.
This situation made it difficult to form labor unions, hold strikes or demand better wages and working conditions in the South. Up until this day, the former Confederacy is the poorest part of the country. Welfare payments are the lowest. Services are the weakest. But taxes for the rich are also the lowest. This was the real purpose of Jim Crow. And although segregation itself ended after the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, the effects of this racist system remain today.
