Read the following excerpts from Faust and the book of Job before you answer the question.

Mephistopheles
No, Lord! I find things there, as ever, in sad plight.
Men, in their evil days, move my compassion;
Such sorry things to plague is nothing worth.

The Lord
Know'st thou my servant, Faust?

Mephistopheles
(5) The doctor?

The Lord
Right.

Mephistopheles
He serves thee truly in a wondrous fashion.
Poor fool! His food and drink are not of earth.
An inward impulse hurries him afar,
(10) Himself half conscious of his frenzied mood;
From heaven claimeth he the fairest star,
And from the earth craves every highest good,
And all that's near, and all that's far,
Fails to allay the tumult in his blood.

The Lord
(15) Though in perplexity he serves me now,
I soon will lead him where more light appears;
When buds the sapling, doth the gardener know
That flowers and fruit will deck the coming years.

Mephistopheles
What wilt thou wager? Him thou yet shall lose,
(20) If leave to me thou wilt but give,
Gently to lead him as I choose!

The Lord
So long as he on earth doth live,
So long 'tis not forbidden thee.
Man still must err, while he doth strive.

Mephistopheles
(25) I thank you; for not willingly
I traffic with the dead, and still aver
That youth's plump blooming cheek I very much prefer.
I'm not at home to corpses; 'tis my way,
Like cats with captive mice to toy and play.

The Lord
(30) Enough! 'tis granted thee! Divert
This mortal spirit from his primal source;
Him, canst thou seize, thy power exert
And lead him on thy downward course,
Then stand abash'd, when thou perforce must own,
(35) A good man in his darkest aberration,
Of the right path is conscious still.

Mephistopheles
'Tis done! Full soon thou'lt see my exultation;
As for my bet no fears I entertain.
And if my end I finally should gain,
(40) Excuse my triumphing with all my soul.
Dust he shall eat, ay, and with relish take,
As did my cousin, the renowned snake.1

The Lord
Here too thou'rt free to act without control;
I ne'er have cherished hate for such as thee.
(45) Of all the spirits who deny,
The scoffer is least wearisome to me.
Ever too prone is man activity to shirk,
In unconditioned rest he fain would live;
Hence this companion purposely I give,
(50) Who stirs, excites, and must, as devil, work.
But ye, the genuine sons of heaven, rejoice!
In the full living beauty still rejoice!
May that which works and lives, the ever-growing,
In bonds of love enfold you, mercy-fraught,
(55) And Seeming's changeful forms, around you flowing,
Do ye arrest, in ever-during thought!
(Heaven closes, the Archangels disperse.)

The book of Job excerpt

6One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7The Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the Lord, "From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it."

8Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

9"Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. 10"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

12The Lord said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger."

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Answer 1

The purpose of the allusion to the book of Job in this excerpt is that elaborates on the background knowledge needed to understand the symbolism. Therefore option A is the correct response.

Who is Faust?

Based on the real-life Johann Georg Faust, Faust is the main character of a well-known German legend. The immensely successful but disillusioned Faust makes a deal with the Devil at a fork in the road, selling his soul for limitless knowledge and material pleasures.

Faust, also known as Faustus or Doctor Faustus, is the protagonist of one of the most enduring stories in Western literature and mythology. It tells the tale of a German necromancer or astrologer who trades his soul for knowledge and power to the devil.

The phrase refers to the story of Faust, also known as Faustus or Doctor Faustus, a figure from German folklore and literature who, in exchange for otherwise unattainable benefits, agrees to give his soul to an evil spirit (in some interpretations, Mephistopheles, or Mephisto, a representative of Satan) after a predetermined amount of time.

How does Steinbeck construct loneliness in the story? Despite living in close proximity, all of the characters seem to be lonely. Is loneliness caused by socially imposed barriers, personal choice, or both? Explain.

Answers

Steinbeck constructs loneliness through his characters and their stories and shows loneliness is caused by both socially imposed barriers and personal choices.

Loneliness in "Of Mice and Men"

The famous novel "Of Mice and Men" has loneliness as one of its major themes. In the novel, author John Steinbeck constructs the idea of loneliness through his characters and their stories. Many are ranchmen who go from place to place to find work. They have no family or friends.

The characters and the plot show that loneliness is caused by both personal choices and social barriers. We could see the life of those ranchmen as their personal choice and think they can blame no one but themselves for such loneliness. In some cases, that would not be wrong. Characters Lennie and George prove it is possible to find companionship even living such a life.

However, social barriers play a great role as well. Perhaps these men have become ranchmen because that was their only option. And we cannot forget about Curly's wife, who lives an isolated life simply because she is a woman. Her husband forbids her to find company and divert herself. Thus, society imposes loneliness upon her.

Brainliest!!! Have you ever seen an actor barely move his arms when the scene requires that he extend his arm in a sweeping gesture? He looks more like a penguin flapping his flippers tightly at his side than like a man making an important point. Unfortunately, such an actor may never have studied movement for the theatrical stage. Acting students are required to take courses in exercise and movement to help them develop a full range of motions they can use to prepare for a role. Instructors teach a variety of physical movements along with different theatrical movement styles. They encourage students to connect voice and physical movement and to look at the relationship between a character’s spoken lines and physical movements. Movement impacts the meaning of each line. In addition, most theater classes cover changes in movement through different historical periods. Studying the variations allows students to see how movement has evolved and lets them expand their movement repertoires. They also learn to understand the different ways actors have been treated by society over the last few centuries.
Most acting students leave their movement classes feeling that they have a much better understanding of the work involved in creating a fully developed character.

When writing either for or against a certain issue, writers will often use words with a positive or negative connotation. Identify 3 words or phrases from the paragraph that support the writer’s beliefs about the need for movement lessons for actors.

Henry falls in love with a nurse that he met and wants to be with her but she doesn't want to be with him, henry soon gets injured and doesn't want to be participating in the Italian army anymore after being sent back to the front for drinking alcohol while in the hospital Henry decides he wants to leave and live a happy life with his woman away from the hurt and death, Henry leaves the army on a close call just barely making it out, that makes him seen as a criminal and a traitor to his homeland, Henry is happy that he has left but he feels guilty for leaving and is now being seen as something he is not. Catherine later passes away from childbirth the baby was still born sadly. This story is important for other people to understand because no matter what you choose in life there will always be an issue with the choices you make you just have to choose what makes you feel the happiest, but all and all you may have bigger problems with the choice you pick than what you had before you made the decision.
I can relate to this story because my mother kicked me out of her house which I wanted to happen so I could live with my dad but she didn't let me take my cat and I miss him terribly she also has turned the whole family against me by saying stuff that's just not true. This story is extremely good at showing us that impulsiveness can cause more problems than what you had before.

In 1940, what did Louie feel pulled to do and why? Use evidence from the text to support your response.

Answers

Answer:

Training is nearly impossible on the luxury steamer Manhattan, which brings the American Olympic team to Germany. Louie is forced to train on the confined upper deck, but is constantly knocked off balance by the ship’s sway. The ship serves delicious food, and by the time Louie arrives in Germany, he has gained twelve pounds in only nine days.

The Olympic Village is magnificent and everything is perfectly controlled by the Germans. Louie knows he has no chance at a medal because Finland has been so dominant in the past. During his qualifying heat, he barely squeaks by into the finals with a fifth-place finish, feeling sluggish and bloated. Before the final, he opens an envelope from Pete, with contains a joker playing card and an ace. Pete’s letter asks him which one he will be.

Remembering this during the race, as Louie nears the finish, he decides to give an all-out kick. Starting from fourth-to-last, Louie pushes up, passing runner after runner until he moves all the way up to eighth place and finishes with the fastest American time of the year. This miraculous finish catches the eye of Hitler, who invites Louie over to his box for a handshake.

Happy with his finish, Louie hits the town with a fellow Olympian. When he spots a Nazi flag, he thinks it will be a good souvenir, as it did not hold the heavy meaning for Louie or other Americans that it would soon enough. He grabs it when two guards turn their back. He is caught but manages to finagle his way out of trouble, and the guards not only let him go, but give him the flag to keep. The press embellishes the story greatly, claiming Louie heroically escaped from gunfire and that Hitler himself gave him the flag.
