Muir's efforts were instrumental in the establishment of numerous national parks, including Sequoia (1890), Mount Rainier (1899), and the Grand Canyon (1877). (1908). He argued that "only Uncle Sam" could safeguard our country's land for future generations to enjoy, a concept that led to the National Park Service's establishment in 1916.

Explanation:

John Muir (April 21, 1838, Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland—December 24, 1914, Los Angeles, California, United States), Scottish-born American naturalist, writer, and campaigner for U.S. forest conservation who was instrumental in the creation of Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks in California. The Jungle was written by Upton Sinclair to illustrate the dreadful working conditions in the meatpacking business. His description of diseased, rotten, and contaminated meat astounded the public, prompting the creation of new federal food safety regulations. Progressives had begun to target large firms like Standard Oil, U.S. Steel, and the Armour meat-packing industry for their unethical practices before the turn of the century. The progressives exposed how these corporations stifled competition, imposed exorbitant prices, and treated employees like "wage slaves." A substantial reform movement had formed in the United States prior to the start of the twentieth century. The reformers, also known as progressives, were reacting to the issues brought by the fast rise of manufacturing and cities. Progressives first focused on improving the lives of those living in slums and eliminating government corruption. However, progressives disagreed on how to effectively govern these large corporations. Anti-monopoly laws were proposed by some progressives as a way to break up huge firms. Others thought state or federal government regulation would be more effective. A rising number of people advocated for socialism, or public ownership of businesses. All of these recommendations were rebuffed by the owners of huge enterprises, who insisted that they be left alone to manage their firms as they saw proper. Theodore Roosevelt was the president when the progressive reformers were gathering strength. Assuming the presidency in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, he remained in the White House until 1909. Roosevelt favored large-scale enterprises. "The corporation is here to stay," he declared. But he favored government regulation of them "with due regard of the public as a whole." Roosevelt did not always approve of the progressive-minded journalists and other writers who exposed what they saw as corporate injustices. When David Phillips, a progressive journalist, wrote a series of articles that attacked U.S. senators of both political parties for serving the interests of big business rather than the people, President Roosevelt thought Phillips had gone too far. He referred to him as a man with a "muck-rake." Even so, Roosevelt had to admit, "There is filth on the floor, and it must be scraped up with the muck-rake." The term "muckraker" caught on. It referred to investigative writers who uncovered the dark side of society. Few places had more "filth on the floor" than the meat- packing houses of Chicago. Upton Sinclair, a largely unknown fiction writer, became an "accidental muckraker" when he wrote a novel about the meat-packing industry.

Symbolism initially developed as a French literary movement in the 1880s, gaining popular credence with the publication in 1886 of Jean Moréas’ manifesto in Le Figaro. Reacting against the rationalism and materialism that had come to dominate Western European culture, Moréas proclaimed the validity of pure subjectivity and the expression of an idea over a realistic description of the natural world. This philosophy, which would incorporate the poet Stéphane Mallarmé’s conviction that reality was best expressed through poetry because it paralleled nature rather than replicating it, became a central tenet of the movement. In Mallarmé’s words, “To name an object is to suppress three-quarters of the enjoyment to be found in the poem… suggestion, that is the dream.”

"Uncommon Coins" adapted from "Circulating Coins" courtesy of The United States Mint

In our daily lives, we are used to seeing pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. But there are two other interesting coins currently in circulation. Here are some details about those coins. Be on the lookout for these rare beauties and add them to your collection!

The Dollar

The one-dollar coin is the largest circulating coin; it represents 100 pennies! When you hear the word “dollar,” you probably think of the basic unit of money in the United States, whether paper or golden coins. But our first dollars were coins made of silver. The word “dollar” comes from the German word thaler, which was a large silver German coin.

Because lots of people around the world used these silver thalers, other countries began making their own versions. American colonists were used to using the Spanish dollar, a coin often used in the nearby lands that traded with the colonies. So “dollar” was a pretty easy choice as a name for the brand-new currency of the United States.

The dollar was one of the first silver coins made in the United States, back in 1794. Over the years, there were times when dollar coins were not made, and people used other denominations. But the dollar coin is back in production again, only it is no longer made of silver. Kennedy half dollars and dollar coins are produced as collectibles, not for everyday transactions. However, they may be still used as legal tender.

The coin’s golden color does not come from gold, but a special mixture of copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel. This mix not only looks golden to human eyes, but “looks” like the silver-colored Susan B. Anthony dollar to vending machines. Despite their different color, both silvery and golden dollars have the same “electromagnetic signature,” so they can both be “read” by the same machines.

The 2019 reverse depicts Mary Golda Ross, the first Native American engineer in the U.S. space program. The dollar coin’s obverse design has included different versions of Liberty and other individuals including President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1971–1978), suffragist Susan B. Anthony (1979–1981, 1999), and Sacagawea in 2000. The Presidential $1 Coin Program launched in 2007, and the obverse design has featured different U.S. presidents. The Native American $1 Coin Program, launched in 2009, features Sacagawea.

The Half Dollar

The current design is based on the Presidential Seal. It consists of an eagle with a shield on its breast holding a symbolic olive branch and a bundle of 13 arrows. A ring of 50 stars surrounds the design.

The half dollar is the United States’ fifty-cent coin. If you’ve ever seen a half dollar, you probably know it shows President John F. Kennedy on the front. But many other designs have appeared on the half dollar coin over the years.

From 1794 to 1947, the half dollar, like most coins of the time, were made of silver and decorated with the head or form of an imaginary woman who stood for liberty. Then Benjamin Franklin became the face on the front of the half dollar. Although he was never president, like the men on our other coins, Franklin was a major force in shaping the United States of America. Below his bust are the initials of John R. Sinnock, who also sculpted the bust on the Roosevelt dime.

Soon after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the late president’s profile took its place on the half dollar. The liberty bell on the back was replaced by the eagle from the presidential seal, except during 1975 and 1976, the nation’s 200th birthday. At that time, the coin showed an image of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the site of many important national events, like the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the drafting of our Constitution.

Color temperature runs from cool blue all the way to warm yellows and oranges, with neutral or the absence of tint, resting in the middle.

What is color temperature?

Color temperature is a term used to describe the appearance of light provided by a light bulb. It is measured in degrees of Kelvin (K) on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. Kelvin temperatures for commercial and residential lighting applications typically range from 2000K to 6500K.

Color temperature is expressed in Kelvins and measured on a numbered scale that provides information on the quality of light that a bulb emits, particularly the color and the atmosphere it helps create. The look and feel of a space can be greatly affected by color temperature.

A neutral white mimics natural “middle of the day” light

why was the impact of the Civil War more destructive in the South than in the North?

Answers

Answer: Union and Confederacy

Explanation: The war was mostly between Union and the Confederacy. The central cause of the war was the status of slavery, especially the expansion of slavery into territories acquired as a result of the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican–American War.

Answer:

Explanation:

The two sides fought differently, Robert E. Lee was a military genius. He was also an American. His strategy by not taking Washington sent the central message to the north that they should stay out of the way the south was economically organized, and nothing more. But as one famous writer about the Civil war (Margret Mitchell) said through one of her characters. "The South does not produce 1  cannon. She will loose."

Another reason was what happened once the North found a good general. Ulysses S. Grant was ruthless and once the North gained an advantage, Grant sent General Sherman to destroy a large portion of land many miles across  from Atlanta to Savana.

Savana was important because what munitions and food supply the South had passed through Savana. Once it fell, many southerners lost hope which was a secondary objective, What Sherman did resembled the scorched earth policy developed in Vietnam. This is a complete war on every level.

A third problem the south had was that the north could, from the beginning, blockade the major ports. The south could not export any of the crops she should have been able to sell.

A fourth problem was that southerners destroyed their own economy by investing what they could in the bonds of the south.  Investment wisdom tells us to diversify our assets which out of loyalty, they would not do. When war engulfed the south, no one would accept the bonds issued by the government as valuable.

The war was about States Rights, not slavery. Slavery was a part of states rights.
