When the Major's strength gave out and I saw that he was struggling, we were about 25 feet from the pipe, so I let go of him and told him to go it alone. He came to a stop, grabbed my shirt, and he wouldn't let go. I would have suffocated however for the Major. I was given dry clothes and a place to rest when we finally got to the beach, where a marine pointed us to a bomb shelter.
