Case study 3: You work in a hospital ER and a firm belief has developed among the staff that the ER is busier and there are more violent patients when there is a full moon. You notice that it is getting more and more difficult to staff the ER when the moon is full. One staff member in particular refuses to work during the full moon citing "religious reasons." 1. Identify the logical error or errors being made in the case study. 2. Explain what professional ethical standards may be called into question by this error (or errors). 3. What ethical behavior/response would you apply the situation?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

1. The logical error that we can observe in these situations, is that the medical team is ignoring that in an emergency room all patients will be in critical situations, which can generate cases of violence and uncomfortable behavior. This does not depend on the phase of the moon presented, but rather on the nature of the environment in an emergency room.

3. The medical team's ability to act according to proven scientific concepts for patient care may be questioned. We can also question the team's ability to separate its beliefs and superstitions from the medical environment, which must be built based on evidence, agility and commitment.

3. My attitude in this case would be to refuse crazy explanations, based on beliefs without kinetic confirmation that any member of the team could have. Then, I would speak to my superior about the need to promote training for the team so that this type of thinking can be exterminated from within the medical environment.

Read this excerpt from Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll Shortly after Alice sings this song. Tweedledee and Tweedledum begin to battle This is evidence that "I'm sure I'm very sorry," was all Alice could say, for the words of the old song kept ringing through her head like the ticking of a clock, and she could hardly help saying them out loud - walking backward means going forward in the looking-glass land one has to run quickly in order to stand still in the looking-glass land O fictional characters are real in the looking-glass land things happen only every other day in the bar "Tweedledum and Tweedledee Agreed to have a battle, For Tweedledum said Tweedledee Had spoiled his nice new rattle glass land Just then flew down a monstrous crow As black as a tar-barrel Which frightened both the heroes so, They quite forgot their quarrel."

My mother is the most confusing, weird, insane, and strangest person i know; she is also the most beautiful, caring, loving, and strongest figure in my life. She loves learning, and has been supportive in my diseases. She has taught me so many things about a natural lifestyles that I keep in mind day to day. I have many inspirational people that surround me, but my mother’s crazy, creative, and supporting personality has made her my favorite person in
the world.

Just sitting with her brings me comfort. She smells of sweet coconut and her skin is warm and soft like soft cashmere. I love her laugh, and how her eyes shine optimistically and full of life. She has a way of making those crazy and stressful days melt away and leaves your soul content. Even when others speak ill of her, I never hear her returning such words. Right now she is miles away, yet I call her and her voice is as warm as her embrace. There is people in this world who deserve an award, and she is one of them. The way she has grown in the past few years astounds me. I can see it in her actions that she is stronger than i have ever seen her, and each time i see her she looks more beautiful than she did before.

She is no ordinary woman. She dances around the house with the grace of a fish out of water, and she gets away with it. She remembers only parts of songs and movies, I found it irritating; but now all I want is to hear her sing her fragmented songs and dance all the time. My favorite memory of her is playing card games, we would play using weird accents that must be a cross between Russian, and Icelandic. I’m not sure anyone else could understand us, and frankly I am pretty sure someone would send us to Essandale if they were to see us. Particularly when we cooked a meal together and turned on the music, then the magic would really happen. Those are the memories I hold dear.I applaud my mother for her strength. My family tells me that I am like her, and if I am anything like her than I would not complain. Having a child at 18 can't be easy, growing up I know she always tried her hardest to be thebest mother she could be. Having a child with 3 diseases must have taken a pretty big toll on her, yet she learned all she could about them and provided the supportive lifestyle I needed to not let these diseases take control of me. She always tries to make the best out of a bad situation, and she has known her fare share of that. Even with battles of her own she would wipe her tears away and take away my sorrows.

She has taught me so much, one thing I appreciate the most is her interest in natural products. Her interest has also brought a great many memories that I will never forget. She was starting to get into natural shampoo products,I believe she tried washing her hair with eggs and rinsing it with baking soda. She came out with her hair looking like Frankenstein, it really did feel like wire. She even tried to put oil in it to fix it, it made no difference. My mom has tried so many things, although many of her attempts did not work as planned she never stopped. Among one of her attempts was a body wash, it ended up as a lumpy concoction that looked that like glue and tapioca beads. She went on to create my favorite rejuvenating body wash with fresh mint and sweet thyme, and every time I smell it think of her. She has so many books on natural home remedies, that I am very thankful for. But the way she studies for hours and keeps going
is truly epic, she is always eager to learn more and is very determined.

Through life we learn lessons, most of them are through people we meet and situations we endeavour. I think its the small things learned that make the difference in life. I learned so many things from her, and together they have made me who I am today. She may not be the most patient at times, but she has been very patient with me. My mother is my favorite person. They say a parents love just happens, I believe different. She has carved herself into my heart with a silken blade. Love and Respect cannot just be forced upon a person, but is a process like any relationship that is done with patience, acceptance, and frustration. I know I will be successful in my life, because of her. I have learned never to give up, even when the world is against you. Because of her compassion and forgiveness , I have come to know a lust for life and to feel content even when the worlds a blur.

Do you think Prometheus was right to disobey Jupiter and give fire to men? Why or why not?

Answers

Answer:

Zeus was angry at Prometheus for three things: being tricked on scarifices, stealing fire for man, and for refusing to tell Zeus which of Zeus's children would dethrone him. ... Zeus gave Prometheus two ways out of this torment. He could tell Zeus who the mother of the child that would dethrone him was.

Why does Jupiter refuse to give humans fire? Jupiter refuses to give mankind fire because he is afraid of one day mankind becoming stronger and wiser than the gods. Jupiter's punishment was making the humans ten times more miserable then they were before by giving them cares and diseases.

So in my opinion, i'd say Prometheus was wrong to give man fire.

Read the excerpt from "The Lottery."

The people separated good-humoredly to let her through: two or three people said, in voices just loud enough to be heard across the crowd, "Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson," and "Bill, she made it after all." Mrs. Hutchinson reached her husband, and Mr. Summers, who had been waiting, said cheerfully, "Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie." Mrs. Hutchinson said grinning, "Wouldn't have me leave m'dishes in the sink, now, would you, Joe?" and soft laughter ran through the crowd as the people stirred back into position after Mrs. Hutchinson's arrival.

Which line from the excerpt contains irony?

“Bill, she made it after all.”
“Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.”
“Wouldn’t have me leave m’dishes in the sink, now, would you, Joe?”
“Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson.”

Answers

Answer:

its answer B “Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.”

The line that contains irony in the excerpt is "Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.” (option B)

Why is option B ironical?

In "The Lottery," a whole village takes part in a lottery in which the prize is quite awful. Rather than receiving money, for example, those whose names are drawn are stoned to death by the rest of the inhabitants.

That is what makes the line in option B ironical. Tessie arrives late for the lottery, but she is the one whose name is picked in the end. If she hadn't come to the event, things would actually have been better for her.

Racism was only in the South during Reconstruction.Group of answer choicesTrueFalse Roger Bannister: The Barrier BreakerIntroduction How do you overcome obstacles that seem impossible? Sir Roger Bannister, the first man to break the four-minute-mile record, knew what it was like to break barriers.Learning a Passion Roger Bannister was born in Harrow, England, in 1929. Since his parents couldn't afford to send him to college, he worked to win scholarships to study medicine at Oxford. Bannister had two loves: studying medicine and running track. He worked hard to do well at both. Because of his studies, Bannister had less time for track practice than other athletes. Most athletes trained at least six days a week. Bannister trained only two to three times a week. In the 1952 Olympic Games, Bannister ran the 1500m race but finished fourth. Many said this was due to his lack of training. Bannister decided it was time to get serious. He focused on doing what everyone in the world thought was impossible. He wanted to break the four-minute-mile barrier.Setting a Goal No one in history had ever run a mile in less than four minutes, although several had tried. For decades, physicians believed that running a mile too fast would cause heart failure. Bannister knew he could set a new world record by working hard. Bannister believed that pushing himself beyond the pain would make him a winner. That is just what Bannister did on May 6, 1954, at Iffley Road Track in Oxford. On a cold, wet track, Roger Bannister broke the four-minute-mile barrier with a time of 3:59.4. Two other runners helped him set a fast pace. Then Bannister relied on his training to run the first three laps of the track in 3:01. During the final lap of the race against the clock, Bannister knew he could finish the race in less than 59 seconds. He broke away from the other runners and flew down the last two curves of the track at record speed. As he crossed the finish line, he collapsed into the arms of his friend Reverend Nicholas Stacey. Bannister was out of breath and out of energy, but he knew he had broken the world record. Bannister accomplished a great moment in history that day. After breaking the four-minute-mile barrier, Bannister competed in a few more races. He ran his personal record of 3:43.8 in the 1500m in the European Championship. That was Bannister's last race. In August of 1954, he retired at the age of 25 to focus on what he considered his true contribution to societyhis research in the field of neurology, the study of the nerves and the nervous system.Making a Difference In 1975, two decades after his feat, Roger Bannister was knighted by the Sports Council of England. He had done what no man thought was possible. However, Bannister knew his athletic glory was fleeting. He felt that his work as a neurologist was the real accomplishment of his life. For over 40 years, he worked in neurology, helping patients who suffered serious neurological disorders. To honor his work and dedication as a neurologist, St. Mary's Hospital in London named a lecture hall after Dr. Bannister. In the lecture hall, the famous stopwatch used to time Bannister's mile is on display. In July of 2012, Bannister was honored to be elected as one of the Olympic torchbearers. He carried the flame into the Oxford track stadium that was named for him. Of his neurology career and his track achievements, as the greatest runner ever, Bannister claims that working hard is the secret to his success.11Why does the author use chronological order to organize the passage? A. to place the events in Bannister's life in the order in which they happened B. to present Bannister's challenge of breaking a record and his solution for it C. to compare Bannister's achievements in running with his achievements in medicine D. to show how the events in Bannister's life affected his career in neurology 19.
