Explanation:

“Define sympathetic magic, and explain how it has been used to understand Paleolithic cave painting. Who debunked this theory, using what kinds of evidence?”

It is well known that as a species we appreciate aesthetic qualities in our environment and surroundings. We decorate our homes with art, trim our lawns and are particular about the color of our cars. When we look back and study the meaning of cave paintings we can't help to think that there was more to it than just the simple pleasure of painting a horse on a wall. It certainly was not easy to acquire and create the materials to do so in those times so we tend to speculate as to why they exist in the first place. As a graphic designer, I understand that aesthetics can be very subjective and relative to one's culture. It makes sense to me that these ancient wall paintings served a greater purpose that just being decorative. Decorating these walls for the sole purpose of decorating is not enough of a motive for these people to go to such great lengths to create these marks. Sympathetic Magic relies on the idea that the paintings could "magically" affect the actions that were being performed by an individual or group that represents something about them or an action they are undertaking. Shamans might have portrayed a hunters prey sleeping in hopes that the said hunter would actually find their in a more vulnerable state such as sleeping. Finding your prey while it was sleeping was more favorable than hunting it while it is awake for obvious reasons therefore Shamans could hold rituals to ensure a successful hunt. This idea of sympathetic magic was later contested by Andre Leroi- Gourhan and Annette Laming-Emperaire. They dismissed the theory based on statistical analysis of debris from settlements of people. They concluded that the animals most frequently portrayed for hunting and hunting were not the ones that were depicted in caves. Essentially the cave paintings showed bison when in actuality the food that was being hunted was something else.

Why is Descartes considered a “substance dualist,” and why is the theory of the relation between mind and body, for substance dualism called “interactionism”?

Descartes is considered a "substance dualist" for believing that matter and mind are elements that interact and can influence each other.

What is dualism for Descartes?

The philosopher believed that every individual is made up of two main substances, which correspond to the body, namely matter, and the mind, or thoughts. For him, the mind is not dependent on the body, so the mind and body are distinct substances.

What is art critique?

The analysis or debate of visual art is known as art criticism. Typically, art critics critique works of art in relation to aesthetics or the notion of beauty. The development of a reasonable foundation for art enjoyment is a goal of art criticism, although it is debatable whether such critique can withstand current socio-political conditions.

What is description step?

The first step in the process of evaluating art is description (Feldman, 1994). Critics provide observations about what they notice when the description process is being done. These observations must be factual, free of personal interpretations or conclusions, and limited to what was actually observed. No adjectives of beauty or ugliness may be used.

It was invented by the French physicist Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1820, through an experiment in which he used a varnish solution on a metal plate exposed to light, thus originating the first photographs captured and recorded.

The first photographic cameras capture images by exposing a metal plate to iodine vapors that formed a layer of silver iodide under the plate that was then stored in dark chambers that turned into heated mercury vapor when such plates were exposed to light, revealing the images.

Therefore, currently photography has developed with the emergence of new technologies, becoming digital and accessible to the end user through cameras attached to smartphones that allow the amount of photographic records that the user wants.
